
ITOPF
ITOPF was established in 1968 in the wake of the TORREY CANYON oil spill. Its original function was the administration of an oil spill compensation scheme.
ITOPF provides key service of emergency response to tanker owners since the 1970s. From 1999 this service was formally extended to the owners of other types of ship as well.
IPIECA
IPIECA is the global oil and gas industry association for environmental and social issues. We have been championing good practice in environmental and social performance for over 40 years.

IPIECA is a not for profit association that provides a forum for encouraging continuous improvement in industry performance.
Fate of Oil Spill
When oil is spilled at sea it normally spreads out and moves on the sea surface with wind and current while undergoing a number of chemical and physical changes. These processes are collectively termed weathering and determine the fate of the oil.

Oil Spill Statistics
This statistic refer to ITOPF information gathered from published sources, such as the shipping press and other specialist publications, as well as from vessel owners, their insurers and from ITOPF's own experience at incidents, where sources generally relates to large spills, often resulting from collisions, groundings, structural damage, fires or explosions.
